A completed hard clue is worth considerably more than the casket alone, because the 1 in 15 chance of a master clue scroll inside it is the best rate of any tier below elite. Counting that, a completed hard comes out around 172k.

Why a hard casket is worth less than a medium one

It is the most counterintuitive fact about clues: a hard casket averages around 117k against a medium casket's 159k, despite being the harder tier with the longer steps.

Roll count is not the problem, since hard caskets roll more often. Per-roll value is: roughly 23k against the medium table's 40k. The hard table has more entries and a much larger share of them are filler, so each individual roll is worth less even though you get more of them.

That is why the master clue rate matters so much here. Strip it out and hard clues are a worse box for more effort. Count it in and they move ahead, because 1 in 15 against 1 in 30 is where the tier earns its keep.

Robin Hood hat and the rest of the table

The Robin Hood hat is the hard tier's headline drop and the piece most people are hoping for. Beyond it the table runs through the higher tier god pages, a spread of rune gear, and the ornament kits that give hard clues their cosmetic pull.

Cosmetics are worth taking seriously as a reason rather than dismissing. A good share of the people farming this tier are not doing it for gold at all, they are doing it for a specific piece to wear, and the casket value is beside the point for them.

Are hard clues worth doing

They are worth doing if you want master clues or you want the cosmetics. They are not the tier to pick if you want the most value per box, because the medium tier beats them on that and asks less of you.

The requirements are also a real step up: hard steps assume a reasonable account with the quests and levels behind them, and the travel is longer. Time per clue rises faster than the casket value does, which is the honest case against grinding this tier for gold.

The best way to get hard clue scrolls

Ninja impling jars lead at 1 in 25 a jar, and as always that is speed bought with gold rather than earned.

Sarachnis is the best combat source at 1 in 40, and it is a forgiving fight with a short trip, which is why it is the usual recommendation. The Dagannoth Kings are close behind at 1 in 42 and worth doing if you want their drops anyway.

Skotizo is the outlier: a guaranteed hard clue every kill. You need a totem to get in, so it is not a method you can farm freely, but it is the only source in the tier with no randomness at all.

Hard clues also come off a long list of mid to high level monsters as ordinary drops, so a slayer grind will produce them steadily alongside whatever else you are there for.
