Gambling in RuneScape, a short history

RuneScape has had a gambling economy for as long as it has had a trade window. The forms changed - flower poker on the grass outside Falador, dice hosts with a rented bot and a clan chat, 55x2 doubling games, and above all the Duel Arena, where staking billions was routine and the losses were spectacular.

What every one of those had in common was that they ran on trust. The host held the pot. The doubler promised to send it back. The duel rules could be altered in the two seconds before you clicked accept. An enormous amount of gold was simply stolen, and Jagex spent years trying to contain it.

Why Jagex shut it down

In-game dicing was banned outright, with dice bags removed from the game. Then, in 2021, Jagex disabled staking at the Duel Arena altogether, citing scamming and its role in real-world trading. The arena itself was later replaced with Ferox Enclave.

The demand did not go anywhere. It moved to third-party RuneScape gambling sites, which have the one structural advantage the in-game version never had: nobody has to trust anybody. The site holds the balance, the site runs the game, the site pays automatically, and the outcome can be verified afterwards.

OSRS and RS3

Most RuneScape gambling is OSRS gambling, simply because that is where the larger gold economy and the larger player base are. RS3 gold is still traded and still wagered, at its own much lower value, and any site worth using treats the two as separate currencies rather than pretending they are one.

What's replaced the Duel Arena

For the specific thing the Duel Arena did - two players, real combat, a stake on the outcome - the closest replacement is a rebuilt version of it off-site. The version here models the game's own accuracy rolls, max hits, Dharok's set effect, dragon dagger and dragon claws specials and venom, takes 2.5% of the pot (1% between two players), and pays out automatically.

The rest of what people used to do in game has become the standard casino format: dice with a slider instead of a host, coinflips that pay themselves, and crash and mines games that never existed in RuneScape at all but have become the bulk of what players actually play.

Is gambling allowed in RuneScape?

No. Staking and dicing inside the game breach the RuneScape rules and can result in a ban. Jagex removed Duel Arena staking in 2021 and banned dicing before that.

What replaced the Duel Arena?

The area was replaced in game by Ferox Enclave, which has no staking. Staked duelling moved to third-party sites, including the rebuilt Duel Arena here.

Can I gamble RS3 gold?
