What you need before you go

Dragon Slayer II, and that is the hard gate: it is a grandmaster quest with a long requirement list of its own, and there is no way around it. Beyond the quest, Vorkath is unusually forgiving of gear compared to most bosses at its profit level, which is why it is the standard first serious money boss for a lot of accounts.

The two things that genuinely matter are a dragon hunter crossbow and an extended antifire. The crossbow is a flat damage and accuracy multiplier against him and it changes kill times more than any other single item. The antifire is what stops his dragonfire removing most of your health bar.

Vorkath is undead, which catches people out, so a salve amulet (ei) outperforms the usual ranged amulets here. It is one of the few bosses where the salve is the correct neck slot.

Gear setup

Inventory is an extended antifire, a ranging potion, a stack of saradomin brews and super restores, and cooked karambwan for the combo eat. Bring more brews than you think you need for the first few trips and fewer once you know the fight.

Ruby bolts for the first half of his health bar and diamond bolts after are the standard split. Armadyl is comfort rather than necessity; Karil's does the job far more cheaply.

The two attacks that actually matter

Everything else in the fight is a rhythm you learn in ten kills. The two specials are the whole difficulty.

The purple acid phase requires you to walk him across the acid pools without standing in them, attacking as you go. This is the Woox walk, and mastering it is the single biggest improvement to kills per hour available, because it removes almost all of the downtime that phase otherwise costs you even though he takes halved damage during it.

The blue dragonfire is the one that kills people. It is unblockable by prayer and it will hit for enormous damage if you are not holding an antifire, which is why the extended antifire is not optional equipment. Watch for the wind-up and make sure your antifire timer has not lapsed.

What he actually drops

Every kill gives two superior dragon bones and two blue dragonhide, which is the floor of the income and is why Vorkath is reliable rather than spiky. The bones alone make him one of the better Prayer-funding bosses in the game.

The uniques are where the spikes come from. Vorkath's head is 1 in 50 and is also guaranteed on your fiftieth kill, which is unusual and worth knowing. The dragonbone necklace is 1 in 1,000, the jar of decay is 1 in 3,000, and both the draconic visage and the skeletal visage sit at 1 in 5,000.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to fight Vorkath?

Dragon Slayer II, which is the real gate. Beyond that, a dragon hunter crossbow and an extended antifire do most of the work. A salve amulet (ei) beats the usual ranged amulets because Vorkath is undead.

What is the best Vorkath gear setup?

Dragon hunter crossbow with ruby dragon bolts for the first half of his health and diamond after, Ava's assembler, salve amulet (ei), Armadyl or Karil's body and legs, barrows gloves and pegasian boots. Every one of those is priced live in the table on this page.

How much is a Vorkath kill worth?

Two superior dragon bones and two blue dragonhide every kill sets the floor, which is what makes him reliable. The spikes come from the visages at 1 in 5,000 each, the dragonbone necklace at 1 in 1,000 and the jar of decay at 1 in 3,000.

What is the Woox walk?

Walking Vorkath across the acid pools during his purple acid phase while continuing to attack, without ever standing in the acid. He takes halved damage during it, but it removes almost all the downtime that phase otherwise costs, so it is the biggest kills-per-hour gain available at this boss.
